International Women’s Day 2009
March 1, 2009 – 9:24 am
Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. The events range from small random informal gatherings to large-scale highly organized events. All celebrate women’s advancement and highlight the need for continued vigilance and action.
Organizations, governments and women’s groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues. It is up to each country and group which theme they choose to highlight in any particular year. Currently 721 International Women’s Day events in 48 countries are scheduled to be held.
