In July 2009, a new product for the treatment of wrinkles was approved by the FDA. It is marketed in the U.S. under the trade name Sculptra. Because its effects can be enjoyed much longer it is considered to be an improvement over the well known treatments, Botox and Restylane.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid implant in the form of a sterile, freeze-dried preparation. Developed in Europe and marketed under the trade name New Fill, it is sold in over 30 countries in Europe and has not been withdrawn from any market for lack of safety or effectiveness.
How long has Sculptra been around?
Sculptra was initially approved in 2004 to restore or correct facial fat loss in people with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
How does it work?
Sculptra works by temporarily adding volume to facial tissue and restoring a smoother, fuller appearance to the face. The effect of the injections is gradual and improves over time. After the initial series of treatments, repeat sessions may be needed to maintain the effect. The number of sessions required depends on the severity of the facial depression and the effect lasts for about one year.
How is it administered?
At each session a doctor injects Sculptra into areas where there is evidence of facial fat loss. Treatment areas can include sunken cheeks, temples or nasolabial folds.
What side effect can I expect?
¢ raised bumps of skin (nodules)
¢ bruising
¢ swelling
¢ pain
¢ tenderness
To minimize the chance of side effects, treatment should be conducted by an experienced health care professional. Sculptra should not be used in patients who have a hypersensitivity to any of the components of the implant or have active skin inflammation.

Congratulations on guiding boomers to the benefits of Sculptra. Having treated patients with this wonderful material for nearly a decade outside of the usa, the FDA approval is a welcome addition for my patients in Central Florida who want a long lasting injectable alternative for ageing around the mouth. I should add that Sculptra is the ideal solution for those who want to keep their cosmetic surgery a secret, because transformation with Sculpra injections is gradual and the result is more natural looking than with any other dermal filler.
