How Do Invisible Braces Work?

Invisible Braces

One of the key advantages of invisible teeth braces, also called aligners, is that they can be removed. This means you can eat properly and brush your teeth.

Orthodontic treatment has come a long way in recent years, so much so that the days of clunky metal braces and uncomfortable head pieces may soon be numbered. Although traditional metal braces are still used by lots of dentists around the world, more and more people are choosing to have their teeth straightened with an innovative technology that has produced invisible braces.

Invisible braces have become hugely popular with adults and teenagers who really don’t like the idea of having a mouth full of metal for 18 months. They’re also ideal for people who would like to straighten their teeth but need to stay metal free for work reasons – TV presenters, actors and other people in the public eye, for example. The beauty of invisible teeth braces is that they do exactly what it says on the tin. Nobody knows you’re wearing them!

Here’s how the treatment works:

Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and from this impression technicians will produce a 3D model of your teeth. Special computer software will map out a treatment plan for you and show you and your dentist how your teeth will gradually move week by week until they are perfectly aligned to suit your jaw.

Your invisible teeth braces – called aligners – are custom made for you and should fit perfectly around your teeth. You’ll normally wear one set of aligners for two weeks before moving on to the next set, however this will depend very much on the severity of your problem. If your teeth are particularly crooked you may have to wear your first few sets for a little longer. At your checkups your dentist will let you know how your teeth are progressing and when it’s time to move up to the next set of aligners.

One of the key advantages of invisible teeth braces is that they can be removed. This means you can eat properly and brush your teeth, however, make sure you’re not tempted to take them out for any longer than is necessary. It’s very important to follow your treatment plan carefully and wear your aligners for the correct amount of time each day. This will ensure you get the maximum benefit from your invisible braces. Remember, the less time you spend wearing them on a daily basis, the more time you’ll spend wearing them in the long run.

It might sound like a very obvious point, but it’s also important to take care of them properly and remember where you’ve left them if you do take them out. Because they are made of clear plastic, it’s very easy to lose site of them. At your first session you’ll be given a plastic case to carry them in, so make sure you keep this with you at all times.

If you’ve been thinking about getting your teeth straightened but are put off by the way traditional braces look, then invisible braces could be just the solution.
